Lumped into Echinocereus, this genus takes its name from American botanist Timothy Wilcox. These cacti are native to the United States and Mexico, and have long, thin and branched stems with tuberous roots. Flowers are beautiful and come in a wide range of colours, depending on the species, but they all feature the green stigma typical of Echinocereus. Wilcoxia schmollii (Echinocereus) is included in CITES Appendix I as a species threatened with extinction.
