The name of this genus derives from the Greek words “trichòs” (hair) and “cereus” (candles) and includes columnar cacti native to South America, with ramifications or basal shoots. Like Lobivia, the genus Trichocereus has been lumped into Echinopsis. Both these plants have very large and showy flowers, similar in their structure (funnel-shaped, with scaly/woolly floral tubes), that rarely last more than one day. Hybrid Trichocereus plants are very popular in cultivation and easy to grow. Flowers are brightly coloured.
