The name of this genus comes from the Greek “stenos” meaning narrow, which refers to the narrow ribs that characterise most of these plants. The genus includes shrubby, columnar and even creeping plants. It is widespread from the Southern United States, throughout Mexico and Northern South America. Some species are grown as landscape plants and even to produce fruits called pitaya, which are rich in sodium, potassium and vitamin C, as well as in antioxidants. Not difficult to grow.
