Matucana is native to Peru, particularly to the Andes, where it grows at altitudes that can reach up to 3,700 metres. According to experts, 19 to 17 species should be included in this genus. Matucana species are globular or cylindrical plants, with little pronounced and tuberculate ribs, and produce showy flowers which are usually red (but also pink, yellow, orange and white) and stand up above the plant on tall floral tubes. They are usually pollinated by hummingbirds. Not difficult to grow, but they require a direct exposure to sunlight and ventilation. They do not tolerate hot-summer Mediterranean climate.
