This plants grow in the deserts, along the coasts of Chile and Peru. The name of this genus comes from the Greek “eu” meaning “beautiful” and “lychnos”, “lamp, torch”, thus a beautiful torch. At least 15 species have been described, but only 5 are included in the genus. In Chile, there are large areas where Eulychnia acida – whose edible fruit, called copao, is delicious – is grown. Not difficult to grow, but they prefer large pots.
