Definitely the most beautiful among all genera, although it is a miniature cactus. The etymology of Epithelantha derives from three Greek words “epi” (over, on, on top) “thele” (nipple) and “anthos” (flower), meaning “plant with flowers on top of the tubercles”.
The genus is native to the United States and to Mexico.
The species of the genus Epithelantha grow both individually and in clusters; they are tiny plants, densely covered with white or beige spines. Their red fruits are much more showy than the flowers, which are small and white or pinkish. The fruits attract insects and birds for seed dispersal. For healthy plants, provide a calcareous/mineral soil, full sun exposure and ventilation with winter rest.
