The name of this genus derives from the Greek words “echinos” and “opsis” meaning “having the aspect of a hedgehog”. Native to South America, it is the most popular and widely grown genus of the cactus family. Probably the largest genus, with over 100 species of different sizes and shapes that require different growing conditions. Most of the Echinopsis species have a globular shape and tend to remain solitary, while others cluster freely. Flowers open at night and close in the morning. Some taxonomists have recently enlarged the genus Echinopsis by including into it such genera as Trichocereus and Lobivia. Easy to grow. Provide cool rest conditions and leave the soil dry during winter for better summer/spring blossoming.
