Its name comes from the combination of the Greek words “astèr” (star) and “phytòn” (plant).
This genus is native to Mexico. Astrophytum asterias is also native to small parts of Texas, in the United States, where was listed endangered and has been recently reintroduced. The genus Astrophytum consists of a few species; however, many hybrids and varieties have been created in recent years, which have become very popular with collectors.
It needs a mineral, well-draining soil and a well-bright environment. Water from spring to autumn. Keep it dry in winter.
