This genus has been transferred from an appendix to another several times. Currently, authors refer to it as “Sclerocactus”, but also as Glandulicactus and Echinomastus. It is native to northern Mexico and to south-western US. Some species have extrafloral nectaries to attract ants for seed dispersal or may have tuberous roots. Not easy to grow, due to its adaptation to summer temperature-range excursions. It can survive low temperatures.
