The name Acanthocalycium comes from the Greek “ákantha” (thorn, spine) and “cályx” (buds), because of the spines on the floral tubes.
This genus is native to Argentina and is often associated with Echinopsis.
It grows at very high altitudes and can survive even very low temperatures, as long as the soil is well exposed and dry. Easy to grow. Winter rest at low temperatures promotes flowering.
